My mother loves butterflies, especially blue butterflies. Add in some sparkle, and you’ve pretty well nailed her ideal gift. While looking through modern quilt designs online, I stumbled on the gorgeous Ombre Flutter pattern from V & Co using their ombre fairy dust fabric collection. The fabric has stars that are metallic and let me tell you it is even prettier in person! I adapted the pattern so I could customize the colors and make them perfect for my mom, as well as to make it a bit smaller than the twin size dimensions of the original. Below you can see the difference between the original pattern and my adapted version.

Since the front of the quilt made me think of springtime and parties, I decided to go with this batik confetti design by Hoffman Fabrics for the backing. The overall effect turned out beautifully when combined with the ombre fairy dust fabrics!

Did I mention I haven’t made a quilt before? Or that the last time I sewed with a machine was in girl scouts in the early 2000’s? I mean aside from the time I impulse bought a sewing machine and a dress form in college thinking it would be easy to make my own clothes (surprise: it wasn’t!). After completing the d’Histoire Naturelle crocheting kit, I was feeling brave and wanted to revisit quilting. I originally planned to gift this to mom for a combined mother’s day and birthday present, but once I got sewing I was like a woman possessed. There’s something about the planning and organizing and success of a project that makes my little Type-A heart sing, and boy did this craft make me feel accomplished.

Now, the quilt isn’t perfect by any means, but since it was for my mom, I knew she would love anything I made for her. Between measuring, cutting, and sewing each of the squares, then batching and binding the entire thing, it took about 5 days for me to complete Mom’s quilt. She was so surprised and happy with her gift. Love you Mom!
